A Bouncy Ball, a Quiet Kid, and a Big Calling
Asante Agyei is a regular guy from Pataskala, Ohio—a small town just outside Columbus. He’s in his third year of college studying computer science, living at home with his parents, and working a job that leaves him plenty of free time. But instead of scrolling or chilling, he decided to use that time for something that can have an eternal impact.
Last year, a mission trip to Poland changed everything for Asante. A team from his church ran a simple VBS (Vacation Bible School) for kids—worship with Forrest Frank songs, games, Bible stories like Daniel and Jonah, snacks, and crafts. The language barrier was real, but kids are kids no matter where you are.
One quiet little girl stood out. At first, she was too scared to talk to anyone, especially after her parents left. Then everyone started playing four-square with a big yellow bouncy ball. Asante showed the girl how to play, and suddenly she lit up. She went from shy to excitedly yelling “let’s go play!” every chance she got. Watching her joy—and seeing how hungry people are for Christ even when words are limited—showed Asante this is what he’s called to do.
That fire carried him forward. He’s heading out on another trip to Poland soon and this summer, he’ll spend three weeks in Japan with Encompass. Serving with a team, he’ll visit Yamanashi, Osaka, and Tokyo—connecting with missionaries, serving at a local church, and immersing himself in the culture. Japan’s strong family values resonate deeply with Asante; his own family stays tight through thick and thin, and he’s excited to step into a place where that’s the everyday norm and share the hope of Jesus with people who value connection so highly.
Asante admits he’s not the most extroverted person, but once a conversation gets going, he loves meeting new people and pouring into their lives. He’s currently developing prayer and financial partners, which takes him out of his comfort zone. But he says that getting to serve the Lord in this way feels like one of the biggest blessings he could imagine.
The internship process with Encompass has been eye-opening. Leaders like Joan (a seasoned global worker who’s guiding the Japan trip), and Grace and Malachi from the Encompass Mobilization team, have impressed him with their genuine faith and support. They’ve prayed for him, guided him along the way, and pushed him when needed—making the extra work feel worthwhile and leaving him far more prepared and serious about the trip than he would have been otherwise.
If you’re around Asante’s age and even a little curious about missions, his encouragement is simple: Even if you don’t feel fully called yet, just pray about it. We’re all called to make disciples among the nations...especially the least reached. Sometimes it starts with something small—like a friend saying, “Hey, you might like this.” Talk to people. Pray. See where God takes you.
You never know. Your next step might just light a fire you didn’t even know was there!
