The Problem: Illiteracy in the Central African Republic

The Central African Republic (CAR) faces a critical challenge—illiteracy. This problem has been exacerbated in recent decades by many wars that have weakened the government’s ability to provide educational services to its population. As the number of literate individuals continues to dwindle, the need for intervention is more urgent than ever. Literacy is not only key to personal and societal development but also to the growth of the church in the CAR. Every year we delay, we lose more of the literate foundation needed to reverse this trend.

Our Response: Train Literacy Teachers

Encompass World Partners is collaborating with the National Union of Charis Churches in the CAR and local CAR churches to launch a literacy campaign. Together, we will train literacy teachers in both urban and rural settings to help turn the tide.

How it will work:

• Local Involvement: Locals will work to coordinate efforts, mobilize communities, and identify candidates for training. Local churches will provide the space and a blackboard, while sending people who will be trained as literacy teachers.

• Encompass’s Contribution: Encompass will provide essential resources for free, including transportation for trainers, reading primers (subsidized at half the cost), and literacy charts until supplies run out. Simple training videos will also be produced to guide local literacy workers via mobile phones.

• Sustainable Model: While Encompass will not pay the literacy workers, our commitment to consultations, subsidizing materials, and facilitating logistics will help ensure the campaign’s continued momentum.
