Impacting Eternities by Staying Open to Unexpected Conversations

Impacting Eternities by Staying Open to Unexpected Conversations

September 2025
Written
Adapted from the newsletter of Encompass missionaries Steve and Rachel.*

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the gift of conversation—especially the ones we don’t plan, the ones God seems to place right in our path. Our neighborhood isn’t exactly known for its warmth. Yet a couple of weeks ago, as the sun was setting, my husband Steve* crossed paths with a neighbor. What began as a simple hello turned into a half-hour exchange that opened a window into this man’s life. He told Steve how he was one of six children and had been placed in an orphanage because his parents couldn’t provide for them all. For much of his childhood, he lived off just bread and water. We were struck not only by the hardship of his story, but also by his openness to share it, when usually our conversations never go beyond polite greetings.  Then there’s Karima*, who helps me around the house. Last week, while we canned tomatoes side by side, she told me about losing her husband at just 35. Though she now divides her time between her own home and her son’s, she admitted that loneliness often follows her like a shadow. My heart ached as I realized how many people around us are quietly carrying burdens we rarely see.  Moments like these remind us how important it is to stay attentive. Every unplanned conversation is an opportunity—an opening where God can work. That’s why we often pray with our kids to be salt and light wherever we go. Even the smallest interaction might plant a seed that shapes someone’s eternity.

Would you join us in praying that we can be faithful in these moments? We long to be present, to listen well, to share our story, to offer encouragement from God’s Word, and to pass along the lessons He has taught us. Our prayer is that every conversation, however brief, would point people closer to Him.
