“When you’re talking to Mike Yoder, don’t even breathe interest unless you’re serious!” Randy Clark says with a laugh, recalling the moment that changed everything. A casual conversation about missions with Encompass’s Executive Director a year ago snowballed into a whirlwind of prayer and planning, leading the Clarks to their next big step: joining Encompass World Partners’ team in Osaka, Japan.
“We weren’t even sure we were ready,” Susan shares. “We still had kids at home, jobs, and so many loose ends. But when God calls, He doesn’t waste time. And now, it’s all falling into place.”
Married for 28 years, Randy and Susan share a love for adventure, ministry, and cross-cultural connections. Their family is a beautiful mosaic of different nationalities. In 2012, the Clarks felt God calling them to South Africa for what they thought would be a one-year mission trip. After the year, they realized God was calling them to remain in Africa long-term. “We sold our house in California while we were in Africa and put everything into storage,” Randy recalls. “Before we knew it, one year turned into five.”
During their time in South Africa, they launched a Bible club in a public school, led Bible studies, and supported refugee communities. “It wasn’t always easy,” Susan reflects. “But God taught us to trust Him every step of the way. He provided everything we needed—even when we doubted.”
Their time on the mission field profoundly shaped their understanding of ministry, discipleship, and God’s faithfulness. Now, back in California, they’re stepping into a new mission field: Japan.
Japan is one of the world’s most spiritually challenging countries, with less than one percent of the population identifying as Christian. Missionaries often face isolation and discouragement in the face of such overwhelming spiritual need. That’s where Randy and Susan feel uniquely equipped to help.
“Our vision is to be encouragers,” Randy explains. “We’ve raised kids, been on the mission field, and served in ministry for years. We know what it’s like to feel stretched thin, and we want to come alongside the Osaka team to help them stay the course.”
The Clarks plan to make at least one trip to Japan each year, staying for a few months at a time. They’ll mentor missionaries, assist with outreach, and serve as a bridge between Japanese ministry efforts and their work with Japanese students at California State University in Long Beach.
Randy adds, “It’s humbling to think about the impact we can have just by showing up and being available. God’s already been at work in Japan—we’re just joining His story.”
As Randy and Susan step into this new calling, they’re inviting others to partner with them in ministry. “God has always provided through His people,” Susan says. “We’re trusting Him to do it again.” Your financial and prayerful support will empower the Clarks to encourage and sustain gospel work in one of the most challenging mission fields in the world. Would you consider joining them as they bring hope and encouragement to Japan?
